Antony Kirwan shares his experience after 4 years using Maxstim products

When shallow rooting was leaving the greens at Romford Golf Club more vulnerable to drought stress and drying out, Course Manager Antony Kirwan wanted an input that could complement his existing agronomy programme.

With 36 years of industry experience and over 8 years at Romford, Antony introduced Maxstim Sport and Cynosa™ with clear objectives: improve rooting, create greater consistency across the playing surfaces and reduce the impact of drought stress.

Four seasons later, Maxstim remains part of the club’s maintenance programme.

A measurable difference within months

The response was evident within a few months. During the first summer of application, Antony measured root depth and shoot development and also observed improvements in chlorophyll and colour.

“We have seen an overall 50% increase in root development and root mass. This was evident within a few months.”

Antony reports no direct change in disease levels but says recovery from stress has improved significantly.

Integrated into day-to-day course management

Following the initial results, Maxstim became part of Romford’s ongoing maintenance programme.

Across 1.1 ha of greens and approaches covering 18 holes, Maxstim Sport is applied at 20 L/ha every fortnight, with Cynosa™ at 2 L/ha each month. Both fit into the club’s established spray schedule with no issues around tank mixability.

When asked if he would recommend the programme to fellow greenkeepers, Antony said:
