Increase in onion yield after a 20% reduction in fungicide

Trial Data

20% less fungicide use

Food availability and affordability are critical for securing global food security. Fungicides are often used to protect crops and secure food channels. However, the use of these can have negative environmental impacts, including:

  • Polluting waterways
  • Harming important pollinating insects
  • Driving fungicide resistance
  • Harming human health

What can we do to reduce the use of agricultural chemicals and still meet our global food supply targets?

And how can Maxstim’s complex biostimulants help?

Our agronomy team have been working with onion farmers in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire to assess if it is possible to reduce the use of agricultural fungicides and still improve the yield of a red onion crop. We’ve compared best practice control plots to plots using a Maxstim biostimulant treatment regime.

We demonstrated previously that our complex biostimulants trials achieved a margin increase of over £1400 per hectare, and that yield increases were possible with the use of 20% less fertiliser. To investigate the impact of reducing fungicides, we applied an experimental treatment with 20% less fungicide than currently described as best practice. The growers implemented our application protocol, on a crop of Red Baron variety, at the recommended total amount of 32.5L of Agriculture+ and 8L of Cynosa per hectare spread over 4 separate applications. The initial application was injected into the soil at planting, providing a great starter for the crop, followed by remaining applications delivered as a foliar spray. The increase in yield was calculated at harvest.

Agriculture+ is a complex biostimulant with a wide range of bioactive components including our unique bioflavonoids and polyphenols, creating better root development and early growth. Read more about Agriculture+ here

Cynosa™ contains ortho silicic acid enabling plants to assimilate silicon to strengthen plant structures and increase resistance to disease. Read more about Cynosa here

The trial results

The results showed that compared to the control plots there was an additional 7.75 t/ha more yield in the areas treated with 20% less fungicide. With this data, our team has calculated that even after the deduction of the product cost of Maxstim complex biostimulants, there was an increase in crop margin per hectare of £1194 for the areas treated with Maxstim products and 20% less fungicides. This demonstrates improved efficiency as a result of the application of our complex biostimulants, and that increased profit margins are still possible when additional agricultural inputs are reduced, providing a much more sustainable solution for the future.
