53 potato field trials

From 2022 to 2025, Maxstim Agriculture+ was evaluated in 53 potato field trials across the UK, conducted under commercial farming conditions. These trials spanned four seasons and included both maincrop and salad varieties grown using standard farming practices. The trial results focused on improvements in yield, profit margins, and skin quality.

Across the full programme, there is a 99.98% certainty that treatments were effective, based on a Chi Square value of 13.44 (p = 0.000246).

The results below summarise the performance recorded across those 53 UK potato field trials.

Key results from 53 UK potato field trials

  • 53 commercial field trials
  • 50 maincrop potato trials
  • 3 salad crop trials (two-year dataset)
  • 3.7 t/ha average maincrop yield increase
  • 6.5% average maincrop yield uplift
  • Yield increases consistently in the range of 6–8% (3–4 t/ha)
  • £360 per hectare average maincrop margin increase after cost
  • 91% success rate for skin finish improvement in in-furrow trials
  • £660 per hectare average margin increase in salad trials

Maincrop potato yield performance

Of the 53 UK potato field trials, 50 were maincrop crops.

Across those 50 trials:

  • 3.7 tonnes per hectare average yield increase
  • 6.5% average yield uplift
  • Control yield: 57.4 t/ha
  • Treated yield: 61.1 t/ha
  • £360 per hectare average margin increase after product cost

Across four seasons, yield increases were consistently described within a range of 6–8%, equivalent to 3–4 tonnes per hectare.

Margin and pack-out impact

Yield performance was assessed alongside commercial return.

Across the 50 maincrop trials, the average margin increase recorded was £360 per hectare after deduction of Maxstim costs.

Within in-furrow trials:

  • 31 of 33 trials showed significant skin finish improvement
  • Representing a 91% success rate

In those trials:

  • Maincrop packing varieties recorded margin increases of up to £827 per hectare
  • Salad varieties recorded margin increases of up to £1300 per hectare

This in-furrow work received the Bronze Innovation Award at PotatoEurope 2025.

Salad crop results (two-year dataset)

The 53 UK potato field trials include 3 salad crop trials conducted over two years.

Across these salad trials:

  • 3.0 t/ha average yield increase
  • 6.0% average yield uplift
  • Control yield: 51.7 t/ha
  • Treated yield: 54.8 t/ha
  • £660 per hectare average margin increase after cost

Four seasons of commercial field performance

The 53 UK potato field trials conducted between 2022 and 2025 present a consistent pattern of performance:

  • Yield increases in the range of 6–8%
  • 3.7 t/ha average maincrop yield uplift
  • £360 per hectare average maincrop margin increase after cost
  • 91% success rate for skin finish improvement in in-furrow trials
  • £660 per hectare average margin increase in salad trials

These results reflect replicated commercial field performance across multiple varieties and growing seasons.

For growers reviewing input performance over time, this four-year dataset provides a measured record of yield, margin and quality outcomes under standard farm practice.
